Christian doom metal! That’s right…this is where you say “huh?!? What is Christian doom metal?”
A definition: Doom metal is an extreme form of heavy metal music that typically uses slower tempos, low-tuned guitars and a much “thicker” or “heavier” sound than other metal genres-Wikipedia. Christian Doom is music performed by believers with words of hope instead of despair, dread and impending doom.
So I went to a venue in Chicago to see a Christian doom metal band called Virgin Black. It was one of the most moving musical experiences of my life. I was so enraptured by the performance that when they were done I found a barstool in a corner and remained in the presence of God for some time. When I was driving to my hotel I started to play the music again and found myself drifting away. I had to turn it off.
Last year at Cornerstone I mentioned to Doug Van Pelt, editor of HM magazine, that he should try to book this band for his stage and he said “Yeah, for the whole 4 hours!”
Boy, I get chills watching that. You may have noticed the lead guitar is played by a female…or maybe you didn’t. And a live version of the same song:
and another song live:
I gotta go…
