…”The End of Your Life Book Club” by Will Schwalbe. The author’s mother is diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer and he and his mom read books together to discuss during the chemical treatments to prolong her life. This is a family that has always read and the mother has led a full life. Early in the book the author writes “Reading isn’t the opposite of doing, it’s the opposite of dying.”
The mother is also the founding director of the Women’s Refugee Commision http://womensrefugeecommission.org/ and has traveled the world to improve the plight of women, spending extensive time in refugee camps. From the website: The Women’s Refugee Commission is the only organization solely dedicated to
improving the lives and protecting the rights of displaced women, children and
This book has made me realize that I am wasting too much time online. There are too many books to be read and causes to fight for. So, to clear the decks, so to speak, here is my position on current topics. I don’t need to spend time on redundant arguments.
1.The Affordable Care Act is very bad legislation. It will do little to improve the medical care of those that can’t afford it. The best way to care for the poor is to provide jobs that will raise one from the depths of poverty. This administration has shown no interest in this. The real unemployment rate is 13.6% (http://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.t15.htm) and the requirement to be actively looking for work has been stripped from the food stamp program. There is no incentive to get off welfare.
2.When the Great Society was created it was to provide equal opportunity. Now the Welfare State is required to provide equal outcomes. Therefore the ACA requires males to buy insurance for maternity care. It leads an elitist at Georgetown to demand the same birth control that an abused illiterate paramour of a crack dealer should have. A tee totaling church lady must buy substance abuse coverage. No wonder Nancy Pelosi told us they had to vote for it to find out what is in it, they didn’t want anybody to know.
3.Amnesty, yes. Citizenship, no. Deut 10:19
4.I don’t care if the State says gay heathens can marry. 1 Cor 5:12
5.I am consistently pro-life. The United States is one of the few countries that still executes prisoners. End the death penalty.
6.Drone bombing is immoral.
I’m sure there are other issues but these are the important ones
I came up with a whole list of books to read by reading “The End of Your Life Book Club”. Many of them are about the human condition…I will probably find other causes to support just as I will continue to support Project AK-47, a ministry that rescues child soldiers …http://www.projectak47.com/#a-kid-or-a-killer-index
Near the end of the book the author writes “We’re all in the end-of-our-life book club, whether we acknowledge it or not, each book we read may well be the last, each conversation the final one.”
I gotta go…
